Valais Blacknose sheep should have black noses, ears, eye rims, knees, and ankles. Both male and female should have spiral horns. For hundreds of years, the Valais Blacknose was only found in the areas surrounding the Valais region of Switzerland. However, in 2014 the breed was imported to the United Kingdom.

We fell in love with this breed the moment we went to The Blacknose Beauties Show in Carlisle, England in 2019 to see the Valais Blacknose.

The Valais Blacknose sheep is a breed originates from the Valais region of Switzerland, and for hundreds of years that was the only location they could be found. They were first mentioned around the year 1400, but they were not recognized as a breed until 1962. In 2014 the breed was imported to the UK and in 2016 the United States began.

Valais Blacknose sheep are a medium-sized breed of sheep. The females typically range in height from 72 to 78 cm, and the males range in height from 75 to 83 cm. In terms of weight, the females usually weigh between 70 and 90 kg, and the males usually weigh between 80 and 125 kg.

Today, the Swiss herdbooks include almost 13,700 animals. The breed was exclusively raised in Switzerland until imported to the British Isles in 2013 and 2014 by several interested breeders. Importation to the US is being pursued through an upgrading program using semen collected from purebred Valais Blacknose Sheep beginning in fall of 2016.
